Vanessa and Shane live with their young daughter on a rural agricultural property in Wegena in northern Tasmania. They want to move up hill, so to speak, to take advantage of the stunning views from this property to Mount Roland and the Gog Ranges. We have designed a new home that captures and frames these views and is oriented for passive solar gain. An architecturally designed glasshouse that can withstand the strong winds at this site is the focal point and entertaining hub of this new home, linking two building wings whilst also providing a space to overwinter lemon trees. One wing will house Vanessa and Shane’s daughter and their parents, whilst the other will provide a master bedroom and private space for the couple. Visitors enter the property through a semi-enclosed courtyard protected from the elements. This space contains a pizza oven and a barbecue for social gatherings. The new home also features solar panels on the roof, which also harvests rainwater into a series of water tanks.
